- Weyburn Young Fellows Major Donation Milestone Announcement
Weyburn, SK: The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn(YFCW) is excited to announce a major sponsorship increase from the amount of $100,000.00 to $250,000. The funds will be donated to the Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative(WTCSC) to help ensure construction of a new Co-Operative Movie Theatre in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. This donation increase pushes the YFCW to over $3,000,000 donated back to Weyburn and the surrounding communities. The YFCW has been a long-standing cornerstone of fundraising and community involvement in Weyburn and the surrounding area. With the club having been founded in 1922, adjusting for inflation would put this sum over $5,000,000. The WTCSC has been fundraising since 2022 and has raised over $1.65 million. Under the original feasibility study and plan the group would raise $1.6m and finance the remainder of the build. Unfortunately over the past few years inflation has run rampant and this year's economic uncertainty has again impacted projected costs. The YFCW saw the need for a facility like this in our community and recognized the impact that inflation and trade disputes have had on the cost of construction. To that end the club reviewed their original donation of $100,000 and decided to increase it by $150,000 to a total donation of $250,000. This donation pushes the total committed funds for the WTCSC to $1,650,000 towards completion of the construction project.

- What's New at the Weyburn Theatre?
September 26, 2024: The board of directors of the Weyburn Theatre Cooperative would like to update the community on the progress of the movie theatre project. They have been working diligently with their design and construction team and engineered drawings are nearing completion. Once engineered plans are complete, the construction team will be seeking bids from sub-trades to finalize costs. “What we do know is that construction costs are going to be meaningfully higher than what we originally estimated nearly three years ago”, says Sean Purdue, Treasurer of the board. While we don’t have the updated figures, we are anticipating that we will need to raise an additional $1 million before this project can be completed.” The group is considering moving ahead with getting the foundation of the building in place this fall, but there are a few things to be worked out before that decision is finalized. If they proceed with the foundation work, which includes a significant number of concrete piles, they want the public to know there is a good chance they will have to pause after this stage is complete until funds are in place to proceed with the rest of the project. “It is not lost on us that the longer we wait, the more this project is going to cost”, says Ryan Janke, President of the board. “That’s why we are planning to begin the foundation work, while continuing our fundraising efforts” added Janke. While they are still seeking some major sponsors and continue selling seat and walk of fame sponsorships, the Cooperative would like the public to know there is no donation too small. “If all 12,000 residents in Weyburn contributed $5/month for the next year, we would raise more than $700,000”, added Purdue. “We would love to be watching movies by the end of next year but for that to happen, we are really hoping the public will rally behind this project”. Those wishing to donate can e-Transfer weyburntheatre@gmail.com or contact the group at that address. PayPal payments are also an option by visiting www.weyburntheatre.com and clicking on the ‘donate now’ button.
